Case Study | AdWords Pay Per Click (PPC)

I have tried a couple of AdWords campaigns in the past and have a few running at the moment but they rarely get clicked and have never led to a sale.  I am obviously doing something wrong but I am determined to have a successful campaign as I think AdWords or PPC will be a great way to make money quickly.

I have setup an AdWords campaign for my case study site.  I am bidding 10p per click and am the number one ad ahead of three others.  I will see if I can reduce my bid tomorrow and still retain the top spot. I am bidding on just one keyword ‘RK701115′. Is this normal or do people bid on multiple keywords for the same site?  My ad looks like this:

RK701115 Slow Cooker
RK701115 Tefal Slow Cooker
Lowest Price RK701115 4 in 1 Cooker
www.RK701115.co.uk

Any PPC gurus got any tips for improving my click through rate or how I can get some good quality traffic to my sites using AdWords and finally start making money from this approach?

Site has got a quality score of 10/10 which is nice. The other sites I have tried AdWords on got 7/10. Not sure what the difference between the sites is.

Likewise – all my PPC campaigns have acheived 7/10 at best. I am not sure if this was hurt by the fact I was doing direct to merchant linking or not?

Would be great to hear more about how your campaign does, I am also running some single keyword campaigns on single items (high value) – I’ll let you know if I have any luck either! So far have made two sales from this method, one represented a 300% ROI the other one was…well…a lot worse!! Current campaigns are getting no clicks.

To be honest your ad doesn’t really stand out from the crowd so to speak. No real urgent calls to action like save 40% etc.. to really encourage people to click on your ad over a competitors.

Also how many impressions a day is it getting, low volume might also be a reason for low numbers of clicks.

I read somewhere that only 40% of people actually pay attention to ppc so already your market is limited.

Thanks, I will try and add a call to action today.

Yesterday there were 27 impressions with 6 clicks but I suspect a lot of them were from people who have read about the site here rather than actual shoppers. Only one person then clicked on the price comparison unit.

I am going to try and get it better ranked organically, it is number seven on page one at the moment.

After seeing this post yesterday I decided to give PPC a go for one of my own websites. We use Adwords at work so know how well it can drive sales (I work for an online shop).
I created an account and then an ad for one of my own sites and it has a click through ratio of 0.36% which isn’t very good. Too early to tell if it has generated a lead/sale as CJ don’t update their stats for about 24 hours.

Currently bidding 3 pence per click in an area where there isn’t much advertising (only ebay etc) so getting a good distribution. I think a lot of time it’s trial an error as to what will work.

Let us know how you get on!

    Hi Joe,

Having looked at your ad I think it could definitely be improved. I would change:
    RK701115 Slow Cooker
    RK701115 Tefal Slow Cooker
    Lowest Price RK701115 4 in 1 Cooker
    http://www.RK701115.co.uk

    to

    Tefal Slow Cooker
    RK701115 4-in-1 Slow Cooker
    Less than £40 inc P&P
    http://www.RK701115.co.uk

I see your competition have the prices on their units so by putting a lower price it will grab peoples attention!

How are you getting on Joe?

I have checked my stats and since I set up a campaign it has served 3290 impressions but has only had 8 clicks (giving me a click through of 0.24%)
Average position is 3.3 so maybe I need to increase my bid per click.

Still no leads/sales though! I will keep plugging away on this particular site until I can start converting and then move onto the next one. I have bought a few good domains which all need work but it’s a case of trying to find the time!

Yesterday I had CTRs of 0.82% and 0% for my two campaigns. They don’t get as many impressions as your ads though.

@wonder_lander: thanks, I have changed my add. Will let you know how I get on.

Before I started there was only one other site doing PPC but now there appears to be a few more.
