Google AdWords vs Google Keyword Tool

My regular readers will know I often like to grumble about the lack of accuracy of the Google Keywoord Tool.

Getting a site to number one in Google usually gives me about 2-4% of the number given by the Google Keyword Tool for exact search in hits per month i.e. Google Keyword Tool says 14,000 exact matches for my sites main keyword but my site will only get about 500 hits per month making it completely unprofitable.  Either no one is clicking through or the Google Keyword Tool is well out.

So to find out I have just setup an AdWords campaign for one of my sites main keyword.  The Keyword Tool said there were 12,100 exact searches for this keyword last month but my site at number two in Google only got 140 hits in that month (1%).

Lets see how many impressions my ad gets (and lets hope it doesn’t cost me too much!).

Will be interesting to see what results you get.

From the ones I have tested in the past Google has always over estimated the results based on the daily impressions the ad has generated.

Have you set the ad to only show on Google and exclude the content network or does your ad show on other sites than Google?

Do you have the results yet? I don’t think the numbers match either. My experience shows less hits than the tool suggest and I am number one on the page.

I have had the same problems with the google keyword tool – the differant results have no comparison with each other – for “girona flight” keyword about 12 months ago i got 1.5 million searches for exact phrase.

Ok this sounded dodgy so when I checked again a few months later it was only a few hundred visitors a month.

If I was a cynical person which i am not I could form the opinion that it benefits google to show people the higher figure when it is an PPC campaign as they wilol get more excited.

But because google says ” don’t be evil” I really can’t see it!

Anyway social media will soon make this more accurate!

I think Google forget about that tagline many years ago (if they ever stuck to it).
