How often does Google update its listings?

A fair amount of my sites were on page one in Google for their keywords.

One was as high as number three on page one so was getting around 10 hits a day.  The other sites were mainly found on the bottom half of page one so were getting a few hits a day. Some were making the odd sale but most were making none.   They were all for 5,000 to 10,000 monthly searched keyword niches.

I check my sites each day to see where they are ranking and there hadn’t been much movement until I checked a few days ago to find most of them had all gone down the Google search enging results page (serps) on the same day.

This lead me to wonder how often does Google update its index?  I thought it was a constant process but as a lot of my pages all jumped on the same day it leads me to think otherwise.

It doesn’t really matter but it can’t help to know as much as you can about Google considering most search engine traffic comes via the big G.

Now I have the task of frantically updating my sites in the hope they will return to page one.  If they don’t make it back some will have to be cut lose to allow me to focus on the small number of my sites that are making sales.

Google can index a site within 15 minutes, I’ve made posts on my blog which were indexed within the hour of me posting them. This being said, I agree there is something bigger that happens. every month or so my ranking with change dramatically, i can only put this down to Google ‘adjusting’ the indexing, and for new sites theres always that ‘google sand box’ idea thats be bouncing around.

as far as frantically updating your sites, really you should be constatly adding new and fresh content regardless of your ranking. This helps both in terms of google and in terms of keeping your users in the loop.

    Hiya, me again.
One of my sites is in a good small niche (me thinks) and was launched about 5 weeks ago. However, it is not indexed by google yet and I dont know what to do at all.
Would you share any off page tips with me?

    Hi Miracle,

All you have to do is submit your site to digg, and it will get indexed in 2-6 hours. To make sure it gets indexed, submit to stumble upon and reddit as well.

(This saves seamaster having to answer)

    Hiya,

Just coming back here to say that my site was indexed by the MSN search engine within 4 hours of being submitted to Digg.com. It comes up at number 1 for my three chosen keywords.

However, the site is still not indexed by Google. Are there other tricks in the book to apply?

    Rgds.

    Hiya,
I thought you may be interested to know that this afternoon my site suddenly stopped appearing in the MSN search results. The site is nowhere to be seen. It all lasted 4 days and now it looks like it’s been taken off.

Maybe MSN have the same workings as google and take a site out of the rankings to index it properly.

Any sign of it in google?

    Hi Joe,
My site reappeared in MSN serps after 6 hours of abcense.
No sign of Google indexing. I have done so much…
    - got the site on Google Analytics
    - have Google AdSense ads on it
    - posted to Digg
    - posted to Twitter
    - posted to cligs
    - have 2 backlinks from sites with PR 1 and 3
    - the site has been up since 13 April (feels like longer).

I wonder if the problem lies with the fact that I had other content at this host, which I replaced with the current content and then pointed my domain name (CNAME) to this content. It’s a very twisted story. Will wait a bit more. Thanks for asking.

    Hi Joe,

Did your site ever come back? My top earning site has gone from 4th on the first page of Google down to about page 6 all of a sudden! :(

It never came back for good. That’s not good news! I’d be gutted if that happened to me with a site that brings in a good amount each month.
